FAQs
HOW DID WE NAME OUR COMPANY?
This quote from Simon Sinek sums it up…
“People don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it.”
As we have been exploring and learning about what it means to be a plant-based company, we discovered our story: a narrative of creative purpose, intentional formulation and passion to positively impact others.
Our new name captures this spirit!
This little bird was chosen to be our spirit guide, teaching us to celebrate life with joy, courage and hope while reminding me never let obstacles get in my way.
They show us the sweetness of life, amidst all complexities.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS DIFFERENT?
Purely Maxwell products are inspired by what nature has created for us to utilize. The journey started with a love and study of essential oils, crafting synergies that helped support the mind, body and spirit. Recognizing the immense and pure power of plants, our product development quickly expanded from essential oil and diffuser blends, to include bar soap/shampoo, lip balm and organic herbal balms. Our mission is to provide an all-natural comprehensive product line for holistic benefit.
Our products are:
- Made/Labeled/Stamped by hand in small batches
- Made using all natural and/or certified organic plant oils, butters and herbs
- Free of synthetic preservatives
- Free of artificial colorants
- Never tested on animals
Formulated With Intention - Purely Maxwell is committed to formulating exceptional products, utilizing amazing ingredients provided by nature, that when creatively and deliberately combined, results in beautifully effective end-user experiences.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR INGREDIENTS?
We are committed to using only the finest ingredients we are able to source, from reputable suppliers who must be able to provide Organic Certification (where applicable), Certificates of Analysis, Lot Numbers or IFRA Certificates (where applicable) and SDS for each ingredient...or we will not buy from them. It is not only our privilege to craft what we consider the very best handmade products, but also our responsibility to ensure that we use thoughtfully sourced raw materials.
DOESN'T THIS DRIVE UP THE PRICE OF YOUR PRODUCTS?
We strive to price our products competitively with other handmade producers. Even though we have established relationships with our suppliers that allow us to buy at bulk pricing to keep our costs contained, we realize that our cost per ounce of finished product is likely higher than most other producers as we refuse to use synthetic fragrance and colorants, or ingredients such as palm oil due to it's questionable harvesting practices (even though it's cheaper and more easily produces a hard bar of soap). Ultimately, we are 100% committed to our customer's health and well-being, before our bottom line. Yes, of course, we are a business and, as such, need to make a profit on our products, but earning your trust and loyalty is our focus and daily priority.
HOW LONG DOES A BAR OF YOUR SOAP LAST?
Our Face & Body Bar soap will typically last 3-4 weeks for one person, but is largely dependent on how you care for the soap. Due to the fact that our soap is 100% natural and contains no artificial hardeners or palm oil, it is a slightly softer bar than those produced by the "big guys", most of which are more of a detergent bar with all the glycerin removed than real soap. Your skin will take notice and give thanks!
HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY SOAP?
Handmade soap should be kept on a draining soap dish and out of standing water, or it can become mushy and breakdown too quickly. You can order some really cool handmade soap "dishes" from our accessory page, which your bars will appreciate. Additionally, until use, handmade soap should be stored in a cool and dry location (typically out of the humid bathroom environment) in order to prolong the life of the bars.
DO THE PRODUCTS EXPIRE?
Purely Maxwell makes all products by hand, in small batches, without the use of the synthetic preservatives that are typically found in many commercial products. Thus, our products do not have an infinite shelf life and should be opened within 6 months from purchase date (except soap that naturally has a significantly longer shelf life). How you use and care for the products when opened will affect the lifespan -- water, air and even our own skin can bring dirt and contaminates in contact with the product, thus exposing it to bacteria, molds, etc.
WILL WARM WEATHER AFFECT THESE PRODUCTS?
Our all-natural products (typically applies to balms/salves/lip balms) can certainly be affected by warm/hot weather both during transit (while sitting in a delivery vehicle) and in your own home (by a sunny window or in a hot bathroom). We use heat to initially melt and combine the various ingredients, such as waxes, butters or oils, and since we do not incorporate any synthetic product stabilizers, the products remain sensitive to heat. Some melting may occur in transit during hot summer months, but this will not adversely affect the product -- though it could make a real mess if melted and opened without being careful. An hour in the refrigerator will re-solidify the balm or salve so it is ready to safely open and use.
WHY DOES MY LIP BALM OR HERBAL BALM SEEM GRAINY?
Our balms (balms and herbal balms) are made (in most cases) using beeswax and plant butter(s). In some cases, due to variations in temperature or just how the product cools after being made, some graininess can occur. There is nothing wrong with the product and it has not gone bad. Unless we introduce synthetic ingredients like emulsifiers or other similar stabilizers (which we do not), a homemade natural salve will over time have these little beads that are kind of "grainy" -- which is a pretty good indication that the product is chemical free.
